T43i – Workshop on post-earthquake restoration sustainable development

Workshop presentation

Three topics are confirmed in this workshop after having positive discussion with the European prime mover, which are: risk study of the secondary disaster in the earthquake-hit area; construction and sustainable development of the new rural aera; the participation of the homosexuals for the reconstruction of the post-earthquake reconstruction. Above these, we impel the communication of the environmental protection association and stuff reply on Chengdu ecological community demonstration (Annong village of Dujiangyan), and also provide sustainable development guidance for this aera.

Topic for discussion

What vision, ideas, lessons and/or methods on sustainable reconstruction can Europe share with China, particularly with respect to reconstruction of Sichuan Province affected by the Wenchuan earthquake?
How are the various economic and social sectors including urban areas, rural areas (e.g., agricultural villages) and industry reconstructing and recovering from the earthquake? Is it sustainable? Can we identify/ recommend sustainable reconstruction practices?
What lessons can the Chinese partners learn from Europe in terms of coordination, organization and cooperation of the different agencies /groups such as farmers, minorities, and homosexuals that participate in reconstruction?
Identification and evaluation of multi-risk and vulnerability assessment methods to be adapted and applied within the Chinese context (particularly Sichuan Province).
Development of a workshop on sustainable reconstruction methods and practices and application of a participatory multi-risk assessment to a case study community in Sichuan Province.

Pierre Calame Meets Vice Mayor of Chengdu

On March 26th, 2010, Mr. Calame, president of the China-Europa Forum (FCE), accompanied by Ms. Yu Shuo, director of FCE, had a cordial meeting with Mr. Bai Gang, vice mayor of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan Province, for the cooperation between FCE and Chengdu.

Mr. Bai Gang had a high opinion of the upcoming third China-Europa Forum in July. He was looking forward to setting up a sub-forum in Dujiangyan, a county-level city of Chengdu. He believed that Chengdu was qualified for holding an international conference because its profound historical and cultural resources had gradually shaped inclusiveness and cosmopolitan traits of Chengdu citizens. Moreover, the second development campaign of the western regions would be a brand new opportunity for both Chengdu and the world. It would call for the participation of top-level experts and scholars. Mr. Bai Gang insisted that Chengdu should be a destination rather than a visiting place for Mr. Calame and his delegation, because Chengdu's development corresponded perfectly with the topics of the Forum. He indicated that Chengdu would compete actively for the bid for the host of the fifth Forum.

Mr. Calame thought highly of the support from Chengdu and expressed his gratitude to Mr. Bai. He said that the essence of great civilization was more than material existence. According to Mr. Calame, a city would be an important unit in the future governance pattern of the world, and its integrating force would be powerful beyond a nation. Therefore, it would be rather significant if Chengdu joined China-Europa Forum as an independent identity. "The Forum is the common wealth of the whole world, so everyone not only has the right to make decisions on it, but also has the obligation to involve its maintenance and development."

This meeting laid a solid foundation for the future cooperation between China-Europa Forum and Chengdu.

Pierre Calame Meeting with the President of Renmin University Mr. Ji Baocheng

On March 25, 2010,at 9:30am, the Chairman of China-Europa Forum Foundation Mr. Calame held a meeting with the president of Renmin University Mr. Ji Baocheng. They discussed the development of the China-Europa Forum and the cooperation on it.

In the process of discussion, Mr. Calame introduced the experience and the achievements of the Forum during the passed five years. He said that the establishment of the forum was an attempt to explore a new way of dialogue between Chinese and European societies with a hope of attracting people of different fields. The success of the second biennial meeting held in 2007 on the basis of the first one helped the Forum to become a substantial way of dialogue between China and Europe in the long run. In the discussion Mr.Calame expressed his gratitude for the support and help offered by Renmin University, and he thought highly of the role of Renmin University in the development of the Forum.

After listening to the introduction of Mr.Calame, Mr. Ji Baocheng praised the achievement of the Forum and its positive role in the communication between China and Europe. He said that the intercourse between two sides shouldn't be confined to economic trade and it was very important to link up the cultures of the two sides. The establishment of China-Europa Forum explored an effective way for such civil cooperation. Mr. Ji Baocheng expressed his willingness to cooperate with China-Europa Forum to establish a long-term mechanism and lend his help in the third biennial meeting as well as the future development of the Forum.

At the end of the meeting Mr.Calame invited Mr. Ji Baocheng to attend the third biennial meeting which would be held in Hong Kong in the middle of July. Mr. Ji Baocheng accepted the invitation with pleasure and said that he would attend the meeting on time.

Pierre Calame interviewing at Qiangguo BBS

The president of the China-Europa forum Pierre Calame had an interview at Qiangguo BBS on the People Net on March 25. Mr. Calame answered the questions asked by Chinese netizens about the topic of transformation to a sustainable society.

Mr. Calame said we don't lack global systems for coordination. We need the most is the mode of thinking and the movers who are able to achieve the course of action for a sustainable society. He also mentioned those counties having great civilization are quite aware of the importance of thinking and solving the problems in the development.

He gave a definition of a sustainable society when asked by the netizens. A sustainable society depends on three relations, between people, between societies, and between human being and biosphere. And we are not dealing very well with the three relations right now.

The interview lasted for one and half an hour. Mr. Calame said he is an old friend of Qiangguo BBS and he hopes China-Europa forum can bring some changes for the two societies.

EUROPEAN PREPARATORY MEETING FOR THE THIRD BIENNIAL OF THE CHINA IN MADRID – Workshops Migrants and Migrations

Education of migrants' children and its role in integration (T14g) - Community of rural migrant workers (T23a)

The meeting will be held in Madrid, on the 29 and 30 January 2010. It will be co-organised by CEPAIM in partnership with EAPN Spain and the European office of the China-Europa Forum. This is a preparatory meeting gathering the Europeans participants in the frame of two workshops on education of migrant's children and on community of rural migrant worker. The Madrid meeting will gather during two days fourteen participants from 6 European countries: France, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

The participants of this meeting are professionals working closely with migrants. The main guidelines of the discussion came out from the Paris meeting : The migrant's situation in Europe, Mobilisation of the main actors in the European societies in favour of the migrants, Mutual acceptance of the migrants and the hosting populations, “Migrants' participation methodology”.

For the European participants and the partners of the event, the aim of this meeting is to give the opportunity to the participants to get to know each others in order to built up a working group, to determine on the European side the main guidelines for the discussion in the perspective of the dialogue with the Chinese partners of the workshop, and finally to define the organization of the work for the next months.
